Dear PUSD Families, Friends and Staff,

Last night, our PUSD Governing Board approved our Roadmap to Reopening Schools. We also announced our intention to start distance learning on August 6, the original first day of school. We will be taking attendance and working with students online in the mornings. Afternoons will be set aside to support teachers and staff with training to have the tools to support a strong distance learning instruction plan. This will likely take place for the first two weeks, and then expand based on our availability to safely bring our students back into the classrooms. Scheduling and instruction will likely become more lengthy and structured as time moves forward. What happens after August 17 very much depends on the level of risk of COVID-19 at the time. Throughout our reopening process, families will have the option to continue with distance learning if they feel that it is the best option for their children. Each school will have a checkout schedule soon for families that need to borrow a device.

As promised, the Roadmap is attached. It is extensive, and while that can bring an overwhelming feeling, I hope that you see it as a flexible guide during these unsure times. Like a roadmap, this outlines choices and options to get where we need to go. The best path will depend on the many variables at that particular time. This is not one answer to this pandemic, but a versatile approach to different types of learning based on the risk level of COVID-19 over time.

The Roadmap was created based on the Arizona Department of Education Roadmap, input from hundreds of hours of committee work, The Yavapai County Health Department, attorney input, parent and staff surveys, and many more resources. We look forward to your continued input and ideas. We will be bringing another survey your way soon so that we can continue to understand, clarify and meet the needs of our students and families.

Thank you for your incredible patience and courage as we all tackle this unknown together. We will be sharing lots of information in the next days and weeks. Much of this will be the supporting documents and links to the Roadmap that begin to detail all of the logistics of our different modes of instruction, as well as health and safety measures.

Sincerely,

Joe Howard
Superintendent
