Physical Education

Mrs. Katie Huffaker

Welcome to an exciting year of Physical Education!  It is my goal to promote life long physical fitness skills, health education awareness, and character development.  Our program emphasis physical fitness develop-

ment, team sports, instructions, and games as well as participating in the

Presidential and National Fitness Testing.

Uniforms.  Each student, except for sixth graders, needs a P.E. uniform.  Sixth graders, you must be wearing comfortable clothing and proper shoes for P.E.  Seventh and Eight graders, a P.E. uniform can be purchased at the Bookstore or a plain gray (or white) t-shirt and blue shorts (with no pockets) may be worn.  T-shirts must have names written clearly and legibly on the front (first name with last initial only).  Please mark shorts on the inside or outside so I can return them if lost and it keeps items from being stolen.  Gym socks with athletic/tie shoes must also be worn.  Uniforms must be taken home on a regular basis to be washed.  Please remember to bring the uniform for the next P.E. day to avoid participation points being deducted.  Showers are not required, but are available if the students would like to use them.  Please bring a towel from home if you would like to shower.  Water bottles are encouraged, but no other food or drinks are allowed in the locker room or gym.

Lockers.  Each student will be assigned a locker and a lock.  Students will be charged $7.00 for lost or stolen locks.  Please leave all valuables at home.  GMMS is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students are not to get into anyone else’s locker. Students, DO NOT share your locker combination and be sure to lock your lock. Again, NO flavored drinks, food, or gum in locker room or gym; only water.

Grades.  Students have the opportunity to earn 10 points a day, which includes their citizenship grade. Some health assignments, physical fitness testing, and other activities will have a different point value. To earn the total points, students must dress in PE uniform with gym socks and shoes with laces and be ready to participate with excellent effort and follow all class and school expectations.  A student receives 0 points if they did not dress for the day and half points if PE uniform is not complete (this includes proper shoes).  Points are deducted for not participating to the best of the student’s ability, and for poor citizenship.  If a student’s behavior keeps me from teaching or keeps others from learning, points will be deducted. A three point deduction is made for other infractions (see attached P.E. Guidelines). Following these guidelines help to create a safe, productive, and happy environment for our students. Everyone can succeed in PE!

Being Tardy, Absences, Make Up Work:  There is a 3 point deduction per tardy and the student will sign The Blue Book for each tardy. Tardiness is discouraged.  It interrupts class time and is a counter-productive practice that we want to discourage.

All tests, timed runs (the mile), physical fitness testing must be made up (even if it is an excused absence).  It is up to the student to arrange this with the teacher.  If the absence is excused, the student has 3 days per semester where participation points are not deducted. After the 3rd excused absence, students are expected to make up missed days to earn back their daily participation points.  This will consist of a short 10 minute work out.  Students who become injured or who can not participate in P.E. long- term, will be required to write and work on health and fitness related papers to receive the points necessary to pass the class.

A parent note for minor ailments will excuse a student for up to 3 days.  A Doctor’s medical excuse is needed for any situations lasting longer than 3 days.  If a student needs to be excused beyond these conditions, make up work is required.  If a student is unable to make up physical activity, a health report will be assigned.  Please let me know of any chronic health concerns/problems your child may have.

Expectations and The Blue Book:  The most important expectation I stress is for students to treat themselves and others with respect and dignity.  I expect all students to work to the best of their ability and to come to PE prepared with a good attitude and ready to have fun and work hard.  I expect students to follow the points above and to follow the instructions during activities.   I expect students to behave in a responsible and safe manner and to use class time productively.  Students should use bathrooms before and after class during the dress out time.  Students will not be excused back to the locker room once class has started.

Attached you will find the P.E. Class Guidelines. Not following guidelines will result in a three point deduction and signing in The Blue Book for each infraction. The first and second time the student signs the book, it will serve as a reminder and I will discuss the proper expectation with the student. The third entry will initiate a student phone call, with my supervision, to the parent. The fourth infraction will lead to an after school detention with parent notification and the fifth entry in The Blue Book will lead to a referral.  Fighting, dangerous, foul and repetitive bad behavior will result in an automatic referral and student removal from the class.

I look forward to getting to know your child and to a fun, productive, and physically active year.  You can reach me by calling the school or through e-mail.  My e-mail address is katie.huffaker@prescottschools.com

Sincerely,
