Science Course Overview
The eighth grade curriculum introduces students to physics, genetics, and
chemistry. Students will start the year
off with physics; the laws of motion and how forces affect motion. Students will then jump into genetics and
learn how traits are inherited. Towards
the last half of the year, students will learn about chemistry where they will
gain an understanding of the Periodic Table.
The seventh grade curriculum
introduces students to astronomy, geology, and environmental science. Astronomy will cover the moon, sun, stars,
constellations, and galaxies. Students
will study the Earth’s surface and how it has changed over time. This will include earthquakes, volcanoes,
rocks and minerals, weathering, and topographic maps. Towards that the end of the year, students
will study environmental science (ecosystems, endangered species, habitats, and
biomes).
Students will be
conducting hands-on activities as well as various science labs throughout the
year. Therefore, safety will be a
priority and will be enforced. A lab
safety contract will be reviewed in class with a copy sent home to be signed
and returned.
Students will be
expected to complete homework and study for exams throughout the school
year. All work needs to be complete and
turned in on time. Students, who turn in
work one day late, will receive 75% credit at most. Late work must be turned in
with a signed note from the child and parent explaining why the assignment was
turned in late.
Each student will need the following
class supplies: A BLUE 200-page college
ruled spiral notebook (or several smaller sized notebooks), a BLUE two-pocket
folder, erasers, pencils, and a basic five-function calculator (used for
science and math).
As a parent, you
are encouraged to use the school’s online grading program to aid you in checking
your child’s academic progress.
