Classification: Grades 9-12
Credit: .5 credit, elective, semester, may be repeated
Prerequisites: Hired by food service manager

Students will be given the opportunity to learn about institutional and commercial kitchen operations. They will have the opportunity to learn kitchen safety and sanitation, customer service skills, and money handling etiquette. This is a paid work program. Rate of pay will be determined, but will be no less than $4.25 per hour. Students will be paid for no less than 45 minutes each day. A lunch is also provided for each student worker. This class will only be offered during lunch periods; however, if advisors determine a schedule exception, coordination with the cafeteria manager may result in some students being hired for early bird or other morning classes.

How to get into this class:
Entry to this class will be treated as if applying for a job outside of the school system:

1. Students must fill out a Student Worker Application and submit the application to a school advisor who will forward it to the high school cafeteria manager.

2. Applications will be reviewed for completeness and references will be checked.

3. Advisors will assist the cafeteria manager in setting up student interviews.

4. Upon acceptance into the program, students will be scheduled for both the fourth and fifth period classes.

A grade will be awarded. This class is an excellent foundation for after school, weekend, or summer jobs in the food service field. Students who successfully complete this course may use this experience/reference for future jobs.
