PROGRAM INFORMATION


 

 

 

The interscholastic sports program at Prescott High School encompasses grades 9 through 12. We encourage all students to try out for the programs offered. Cuts will be made for some sports. At the freshman and junior varsity levels our programs are designed to build the students for varsity competition. The Athletic Department strives to provide a safe and rewarding experience for our student-athletes through all the disciplines related to sports. The total program of the school must consider the total development of each pupil. In the schools which serve all the students of all the people, we find boys and girls of widely varied backgrounds, abilities and needs. The task of the school is to meet as effectively as possible the needs and interests of all these pupils.

The fundamental principle for competitive activities and sports is to serve the education
of youth. It should both promote and supplement the regular curricular program of our
schools.

arrow Region/Conference
High School is a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the governing body for interscholastic sports competitions in the State of Arizona. Prescott is in the Wells Fargo Region I of the 4A Conference, schools with an enrollment of 950-1899 students.

arrow Athletic Clearance Requirements
To be cleared for participation in any sport, the following requirements must be met:
•Current physical examination (on or after March 1st of the previous school year)
•Parents’ permission signature
•Insurance coverage
•Birth certificate recorded in Athletic Office
•Consent for emergency care
•Signature of student and parent/guardian on Athletic Code form
•Grades must meet Prescott Unified School District’s No Pass-No Play policy

arrow Pay to Play Fees
There is a $98 "pay-to-play" fee for each interscholastic sport in which an athlete competes. This fee may be reported as an Arizona tax credit donation on state income tax. There is a pay-to-play fee cap of $300 per family per calendar year. No athlete will be barred from interscholastic sports due to inability to pay; scholarships are available.

arrow No Pass/No Play Requirement
To be eligible to participate in interscholastic competitions, students must have received a passing grade in each class taken the previous grading period. Grades are checked each 9 weeks. Students who receive a failing grade (“F”) will become ineligible for competition for 9 weeks (until the next grading period). A grade of “Incomplete” (“I”
or the equivalent) renders a student ineligible until a passing grade is recorded by the registrar.

Quarter 3 4th nine weeks
Semester 2 1st nine weeks of next school year


No-Pass/No-Play requirements pertain to all students grades 6 through 12. Transfer
students must show proof of grade eligibility prior to participation in interscholastic sports.

arrow Sports Physical Examination
A current physical examination is required prior to tryouts for participation in interscholastic sports. Per Arizona Interscholastic Association regulations, physical examinations must be signed by a licensed M.D., D.O. (Osteopathic Doctor), certified registered nurse practitioner (N.P.) or certified physician’s assistant (PA-C). Examinations signed by any other type of medical practitioner, (Doctors of Chiropractic or Naturopathic Doctors for example), cannot be accepted. Physical examinations are considered current if they were held on or after March 1st of the previous school year. Once each year in May, Prescott High School arranges low-cost ($10 donation) group physical examinations for student athletes to be used the following school year. Prescott High School does not have a team physician nor can staff recommend physicians or arrange for physical examinations at any other time.

arrow Insurance Coverage
Student athletes are required to have current accident insurance coverage. This
requirement may be met through private insurance or by purchasing student insurance
coverage. Each year Prescott Unified School District contracts with an outside insurance
carrier to offer a variety of student insurance policies to its students. Athletes may not waive the insurance requirement.

arrow Birth Certificate
Arizona Interscholastic Association rules prohibit students age 19 and over from
participating in high school sports. Member schools are required to ascertain the age of
participating athletes by checking a birth certificate or hospital certificate.

arrow Foreign Exchange Students
Foreign exchange students participating in a program approved by the Council on
Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET), may participate in interscholastic
activities at Prescott High School. They must meet all eligibility requirements for
participation including the requirement to show a birth certificate. Arizona Interscholastic
Association regulations do not permit us to use passports issued in a foreign country
as proof of age.

In addition to Prescott Unified School District policies with regard to guardianship,
the Arizona Interscholastic Association has numerous regulations pertaining to residency and guardianship. If you are a guardian or are considering becoming guardian for a student whose parents live elsewhere, please check to be sure eligibility requirements will be met.
