Discrete Math Modules
The North Central Arizona Mathematics and Science Consortium has the
following modules on Discrete Mathematics available to take out to different sites. Descriptions of the modules follows. If you are interested in scheduling one of these workshop modules at your school, please contact the consortium at 717-2310.
Discrete Math Module 1
Title: Introduction to Discrete Math and Map Coloring
Grade Level: K-5
Time: 2 hours
Description: This workshop introduces teachers to discrete mathematics and its themes. Through hands-on activities, participants will focus on the concept of map coloring and its applications. This workshop covers the following standards:
- Kindergarten Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
- Grade 1 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
- Grade 2 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
- Grade 3 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
- Grade 4 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
- Grade 5 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1
“Color pictures with the least number of colors so that no common edges share the same color (increased complexity throughout the grade levels).”
Discrete Math Module 2
Title: Introduction to Discrete Math, Map Coloring and Vertex-Edge Graphs
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Time: 2 hours
Description: This workshop introduces teachers to discrete mathematics and its themes. Through hands-on activities, participants will focus on
- the concept of map coloring and its applications.
- finding the shortest route between two points
- vertex-edge graphs and their applications
This workshop covers the following standards:
- Grade 6 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1 - “Find the shortest route from one site to another.”
- Grade 7 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1 - “Find the shortest route from one site to another.”
- Grade 8 - Strand 2 - Concept 4 - PO 1 - “Solve contextual problems represented by vertex-edge graphs.”
Discrete Math Module 3
Title: Discrete Math through Systematic Listing and Counting
Grade Level: K - 5
Time: 2 hours
Description: This workshop continues a discussion with teachers about discrete mathematics and its themes. Through hands-on activities, participants will focus on counting and organization strategies to solve problems. This workshop covers the following standards:
- Kindergarten Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1
- Grade 1 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1
- Grade 2 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1
- Grade 3 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1
- Grade 4 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1
- Grade 5 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1

Discrete Math Module 4
Title: Discrete Math through Systematic Listing and Counting
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Time: 2 hours
Description: This workshop continues a discussion with teachers about discrete mathematics and its themes. Through hands-on activities, participants will focus on counting and organization strategies to solve problems. This workshop covers the following standards:
- Grade 6 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1 and PO 2
- Grade 7 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1 and PO 2
- Grade 8 - Strand 2 - Concept 3 - PO 1 and PO 2
PO 1: “Determine all possible outcomes involving the combination of multiple sets of objects.”
PO 2: “Determine all possible arrangements of a given set, using a systematic list, table, tree diagram or other representation.”
