Volunteer Opportunity Menu

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Miller Valley School volunteer! Your presence will encourage students and enrich our school. Before we can release you to be an official volunteer, please complete the following items in the order in which they are presented:

1. Pick up and fill out the PUSD Volunteer Packet from Miller Valley School. If you are a parent of a PUSD student, you will only need to fill out a few papers but do not have to be processed for a background check.

2. Go to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (255 E. Gurley St., 928-771-3260) on a Tuesday or a Thursday from 1-4 PM to get fingerprinted. You will need the following to complete that process: a) Your filled out fingerprint card that you received in your PUSD Volunteer Packet; and b) a photo I.D. Make sure they know you are volunteering with PUSD so they do not charge you a fee.

3. Return your processed fingerprint card and the rest of your completed PUSD volunteer packet to Miller Valley School.

4. It will take approximately 4 weeks to process your packet and to do a background check. You will be contacted by your school site when that process has been completed.

5. At some sites you will need to attend a volunteer orientation and/or a placement interview- call for details

Thank you for your willingness to enrich our Miller Valley family!

13. Become a mentor to a Miller Valley student with Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters’(YBBBS) Mentoring Program- Research reveals that if you want to profoundly influence the life of a child this is best done by becoming a mentor who adopts a relational approach (rather than a prescriptive approach) with a child for more than 18 months (longer is even more powerful). If you are not ready to make that kind of commitment please consider some of the amazing opportunities below. Call Mark (520-560-5910) with questions and for details.

14. Become a School-Base Tutor with YBBBS one hour each week with one child. At Miller Valley there is tremendous need for tutoring- children flourish with one-to-one attention! Call Mark (520-560-5910) with questions and for details.

15. Help Fund PUSD Schools and Not Spend an Additional Cent Through eSCRIPT!- If you shop at the participating stores (Safeway, New Frontiers, OfficeMax, Eddie Bauer and Barnes & Noble), your purchases, at no additional expense to you, will allow the PUSD school of your choice to receive a donation of 1-3% of your purchase. Go to www.escrip.com or www.back2schools.escrip.com to sign up.  On step one of the registration process, if you select “City where Group is Located” and type in Prescott it will pull up every option in town. You can also select “Group Name” and type in the name of the school you want to support. If you do not use the computer, you may contact the school of your choice to request their forms for this fundraiser.

16. Become a Classroom Tutor/Helper (Mon.- Fri., selected hours). Work with the classroom teacher to provide kids some TLC and the individual attention they need to complete their work.

17. Become a Classroom “Parent/Grandparent” and Adopt a Classroom (Mon.- Fri., selected hours, special events). Work with the classroom teacher to develop a plan to organize the classroom for daily needs, field trips, parties, etc. Support the teacher and provide the kids some TLC.

18. Help program a “Big for a Day” Event Through Your Community Groups- “Big for a Day” Events are opportunities sponsored by Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters (YBBBS). YBBBS would teach you how to organize an event like this, provide training, provide the kids and help you with follow-up. The goal of this program is to give these kids an opportunity to connect with adults in a positive way (alternative/positive activity) and to get adults to connect with kids in such a way that their “mentor fears” dissipate and they take a step closer to becoming a mentor. Call Mark (520-560-5910) with questions and for details.
