Students attending Mile High are able to discover the excitement of social studies through interactive, stimulating, and creative projects and activities at all grade levels.
Sixth grade studies the history and geography of the early civilizations through the medieval period. After studying Egypt, Greece, and Rome, sixth graders do mapping, research, and projects to reinforce and enhance the subject matter. One of their favorite projects is to research and present a topic of their choice and create a 3D project such as building pyramids out of sugar cubes, making life size Egyptians and mummies, or designing dioramas depicting Egyptian life.
Seventh graders study the history and geography of the American Revolution through Civil War Reconstruction. While studying the Civil War, students can write a report on a book or film regarding this era, do research about the workings of a southern plantation, or create a diorama of a Civil War battle.
Students also have the experience of dressing as a famous American and giving a three to five minute oral biographical presentation to their peers.
Eighth grade social studies focuses on civics and economics. Law related education is a major component of civics; students learn about law and how it relates to them through weekly classes provided by Yavapai County Juvenile Probation, the school resource officer, field trips to juvenile detention, and Road Court. This program centers on the law and how it relates to adolescents, the constitution, and the community at large. It helps students to focus on their rights and responsibilities as citizens. The collaboration of these agencies and Mile High have received statewide recognition.
One of the activities centered on government is the creation of a political party. The students divide into self-selected groups and invent a political party including a party name, platform, symbol, and slogan. They select candidates for president and vice-president of the class, and create a slogan. The activity ends with each party posting information on the board and explaining to the class about their party before the class votes.
