Communication
Communication is a key element of success at PMHMS. At the beginning of each school year, a grade night is held so that parents and teachers can meet to discuss curriculum, teaching strategies, and assistance available to all students.

Weekly Thursday progress reports are available to students/parents through the counseling office; they not only provide current grades and performances in class, but also have a weekly parent newsletter printed on the back. It is just one more way to involve parents and get the word out on any special events or projects teachers would like to announce.

Our parents can communicate via e-mails to all teachers; they also have access to their student’s grades by going on-line using the InTouch program, which uses a special code for privacy protection.

Students have agendas to record class and homework assignments and to use as a daily communication tool between home and school. Teaching teams also set up parent and/or student meetings to help plan courses of action for improvement.

Fall conferences have a sixty-five percent attendance by parents. The conferences are set up arena-style to provide easier access to all teachers and include at least one evening session for working parents.

Ongoing IEP meetings occur throughout the year. Parents may also phone teachers and speak directly to them or leave a voice mail message. Many teachers make it a goal to contact each parent by phone, postcard, or e-mail each year; one teacher has mailed a positive postcard to each of her students during the fall and spring semesters for the past five years.

We survey our parents with our “School Report Card,” which asks for input in three areas: programs, school culture, and general comments. This survey is available online and hard copies are mailed. We view parents and teachers as teammates in education, working together to assist each student in achieving his/her full potential.

Parent Participation
Parents can be seen in our hallways as readily as students. Some parents assist in sponsoring school clubs and helping to coach athletic teams. Our music programs are always filled with families watching band, orchestra, or chorus performances. Many parents of music students volunteer to help with instruments or fund raising. Parents also help in the classrooms or on field trips.

One example is sixth grade science teacher Greg Stumpf, who annually takes all of his students to Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff with the assistance of parent volunteers.

Art teachers Amanda Chartier and Patty Rummage host a well-attended tea party for family members to show off the student created ceramic teapots.

Parents are encouraged to come into classes as guest speakers such as veterans on Veteran’s Day or to present travelogues in Patsy Jo Huff’s social studies classes.

During Cinco de Mayo, SEI students and their parents celebrate with the staff and students of Mile High. Volunteers assist the nurse with vision and hearing screening of students, assist the librarian Linda Bateman with book sales, and assist in sponsoring school clubs.

We are eager to have parents participate in our various programs.
