I want to welcome students and families to the Prescott Mile High Library! My name is Barbara Gruhlkey and I am the librarian. Since your child attends here, all members of the family are officially patrons and invited to visit and check out any books that you'd like. We are open from 7:30 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. for the school year 2006-2007. We have an automated catalog with a circulation of over 10,000 books along with a self-check out system. There is a loan period of 2 weeks and a total of 3 books allowed per person; however, families may check out extra. No fines are assessed for late books, but we stress good citizenship and responsibility in getting them back on time. If books are lost or damaged, payment for the cost is required.
Parents, please encourage your child to use the library. It is so important for them to continue reading during this time when their school days get much busier and activities increase. Don't let them lose the enjoyment of reading and finishing a great story. Here are some great ways to keep your middle-schooler turning the pages!
Visit the library together
Try to make it an event where you share some one-on-one time and both choose a few books.
Subscribe to magazines that will interest them
These are great gifts for birthdays and holidays.
Listen to books on tape in the car
Listening to a novel that will appeal to everyone makes vacation car trips or even back and forth to school more fun.
Play games that utilize reading
Word and vocabulary-building games like Scrabble or crossword puzzles are great.
Encourage them to read to a younger child
Let them take over ritual bedtime reading when possible.
Model reading
They will still follow your reading habits (though they'll never let you know it!)
