Statement of Philosophy
The staff at Mile High Middle School believes that dress has the power to reflect the person. We contend that we as people often act as we dress. We want students to dress for success to every extent possible.
Note: This Dress Code applies to the campus of Mile High, as well as functions and activities sponsored by Mile High. It also applies when our students are at locations away from school in a capacity of representing Mile High in an event or function.
Dress Style Development Principles
Dress styles were developed in a way that contributes to instruction and learning so that we:
- Promote personal safety and personal hygiene
- Encourage positive behavior and respect for self and others
- Promote positive peer images
- Respect family and community standards
Dress Code

Shirts or blouses which depict wording that is subtly or explicitly suggestive is forbidden. This may be words, symbols, or pictures that may have an inappropriate meaning in society or subculture. Clothing which is deemed by school administration to be distracting to the educational process will be prohibited. This applies to backpacks and notebooks also.
Shoes must be worn at all times. Flip-flops or thongs are not permitted. Soccer style slip-ons are not permitted. Sandals without backs may be worn if they are leisure shoes designed for sport after wear. Slippers and pajama wear are inappropriate. Hats are not permitted to be worn in the buildings. Bandannas, doo-rags, long belts, hair nets, sweat bands, beanies, or stocking caps are not permitted.
Halter tops, crop tops, tube tops, and spaghetti straps are not permitted. Undergarments must not be seen at any time. Low-cut, backless, bare midriff, and tight-fitting tops are not permitted. All tops must be of such length that when arms are raised above the head, the stomach and/or naval is not revealed. Sleeveless tops must have a collar (these must not be such that undergarments show).
Jeans and pants must fit the natural waist. Low-rider jeans are not permitted. Pants and jeans must be free from holes or ragged edges. Pants must be hemmed.
Hairstyles should be neat and natural. Extreme fads, which call attention to the person and distract from the learning environment, are not permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, spiking and colors.
Tattoos are not permitted. Existing tattoos must be covered by clothing or by a dressing such as a Band-Aid.
Makeup, perfume, cologne, hair spray, nail polish, and body sprays are not permitted in class. Their use is permitted in the girls' P.E. area and girls' restrooms only.
Body piercing and face piercing must be deemed in good taste and such that is not distracting to the learning environment. Excessive piercing that calls attention to itself and draws attention away from the learning process is prohibited. For example, small nose rings may be acceptable. Rings with chains attached or large rings will be prohibited. Administrative judgment will be based on whether the item or items are a safety concern or a distraction from the learning environment.
Shorts must fit at the natural waist. No cut-offs are permitted. Shorts may not have holes or ragged edges. Spandex or tight-fitting shorts are not permitted. Shorts must not be so short or so baggy as to reveal body parts or undergarments. Shorts and skirts must be of such length as to not be revealing. Shorts that are too short or too tight are not permitted. NOTE: Length is an administrative judgment call. Staff members will have varying opinions about what they believe is too short, but the ultimate "call" will be made by an administrator. The "fingertip" reference is merely a guide to assist. Common sense in considering body types, i.e., long legs and long arms, will be kept in mind.
Due to safety issues involving potential concealment of weapons and/or drugs, students are expected to wear conventional fitting shorts and pants. Baggy clothing is prohibited in order to insure the safety of others. Pants may not have more than four inches of gather behind the knee. Those students dress marginally will be sent home to change or will be required to tuck in their shirts. Pants and shorts must be secured with a proper fitting belt.
