Early Education is Key!
Prescott Unified School District’s Discovery Gardens Pre-K has expanded once again and opened its doors at a third site, Lincoln Elementary, for the 2018-2019 school year! Discovery Gardens has been preparing children for the next big step into kindergarten for many years. Our main focus has always been to prepare young learners for kindergarten, and beyond, while having fun and providing a wonderful experience.
Ms. Sandy Tuite, a former kindergarten teacher of 30 years, is leading the new pre-kindergarten classroom. Sandy holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and continues to stay actively involved in professional development and community relationships. Ms. Sandy is accompanied by Ms. Marrietta, a classroom para-pro that has worked with Discovery Gardens for two years.
The pre-K program follows the Arizona Learning Standards that will fluidly align with the Arizona Kindergarten Standards. Ms. Sandy integrates a number of pre-K learning areas, including social emotional, language and communication, emergent literacy, math, science, social studies, arts, technology, and physical development. The class will spend a week (or more) on a particular topic using playful, purposeful, and personalized instruction. Some topics covered throughout the school year will include learning about ourselves and our friends, learning about the community and community helpers, wind and water, and learning about diverse habitats.
The program encourages meaningful, personal relationships between teachers and students, teaches science and mathematics introduction, and uses a mix of interactive content like songs and poems to foster oral language and early literacy skills.
The Lincoln campus pre-K still has a few spot available for this school year and offers scholarship opportunities as well.
