arrow Calendar with 6-day schedule

Abia Judd is on a rotating six day schedule for Art, Music, PE, Computer Lab, and Library instead of the traditional five day weekly schedule.  We decided to pilot a six day schedule because it allows us to increase our Music time to two classes and to increase the length of Art classes by 15 minutes.  It also allows for twice weekly computer lab classes when necessary for our fourth and fifth grade students.

The other benefit is that classes don't miss their specials because of holidays. Last year we found that classes scheduled for Monday or Friday specials missed lots of class because holidays typically fall on those days. This year, the schedule rotates around all holidays. Although, at the beginning of the year, it seems confusing, schools that use this schedule tend to really like it.

BEFORE SCHOOL
Students may not arrive at school prior to 7:45. We do not provide supervision on the playground nor are students allowed in the building prior to that. Between 7:45 and 8:25, students may leave their backpacks by the classroom doors, but must either go outside or eat school breakfast until the 8:25 bell. If the weather is below freezing, raining, or snowing, there will be a sign in the front hall informing students they may stay inside
the halls before school.

The “Buck Club” meets in the cafeteria before school from 7:00-7:45 AM. The Buck Club is for students whose parents must drop them off before 7:45. Those students will have supervision in the cafeteria; however, parents must pay $1.00 per day for their children to participate in the morning supervised activities (hence, the name, “Buck Club”). Parents may make arrangements ahead of time by paying for the “Buck Club” or send your child with $1.00 anytime the child needs supervision before 7:45. Students may not be dropped off to wait on school grounds before 7:45 unless they participate in the Buck Club program.

AFTER SCHOOL
Unless staying for a recognized school activity, students are expected to go directly home after school.

Those students who ride a bus should go to the bus loading area and wait in line. Elementary students may not wait to ride buses with middle school siblings unless parents and the school have received permission from the Transportation Director.

Students who are picked up by parents should go directly to the pick-up area. Parents should pick up children in a timely manner after school is dismissed. Students who ride bikes home should walk their bikes off of school grounds. Both walkers and bike riders should leave immediately after school is dismissed.

Kids and Company, the PUSD childcare program, offers high quality after-school care. Students participating in the Kids and Company program will ride a bus to Taylor Hicks or Miller Valley Elementary School for childcare.

Teachers walk their classes out to the pick-up area after school. Parents are strongly encouraged to wait for your children outside in the pick-up area and not in the halls or by the classroom doors.

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP
Because of the need for absolute safety with our children around vehicles, please consistently follow these rules:
• If parents park in the marked parking lot to pick up or drop off your children, you must come across the driveway using the crosswalk and escort your child to or from your car. Students are not allowed to be in the parking lot without parent supervision.
• If you use the curbside drop off/pick-up area, make sure you wait until a spot opens along the curb in the drop off/pick-up zone and have your child exit or enter the car on the passenger side only. Do not have your child walk around the car to the driver’s side. You may exit your vehicle to help your child.
• Do not double park and have your child walk between cars.
• It is very important that parents do not leave unattended vehicles in our drop off/pick up area. If you will be waiting longer than five minutes for a child or are waiting to also pick up a middle school child at the end of the day, please park in the parking lot.

This year we have a great deal of road construction on Williamson Valley and Iron Springs. The best and safest method for getting to and from school is to allow your child to ride a school bus. We strongly encourage parents to take advantage of the transportation services the district offers. If you have questions about routes and times, you can check bus schedules on the website or call the school or the transportation office at 717-3229
