Academics are Alive and Well

Abia Judd StudentsIn addition to Reading and Math, Abia Judd has rich curricula in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Comprehensive Health, and Technology.

A school-wide spelling program focuses on the most used words in writing. Handwriting is taught comprehensively throughout the primary grades. Teachers use the "Writing Process" that incorporates drafting, revising, editing, and publishing student work. Many activities such as Young Authors' Day, student newspapers, and journals encourage our students to be creative and prolific writers.

The rich local history and culture provide the backdrop for our social studies program. Students travel to many local and state landmarks on field trips. Multi-age students travel old Route 66 on an overnight trip and our annual fifth grade environmental camp is a three day (and night) experience in outdoor studies, science, and social issues.

Students get hands-on experiences in science through class projects and integrated units which explore the world around us. We are located next to the Highland Center for Natural History so class are able to spend time with field experiences in their delightful nature preserve.

Teachers and specialists provide instruction in comprehensive health which includes safety education, nutrition, physical education, and for our fifth grade students, sex education.

Every child spends time in our modern computer lab each week. Students not only use programs which aid their classroom studies, but learn keyboarding skills, computer use skills and how to gather information from the internet.
